Gas shutoff valve location and operation guide: Overview
Gas shutoff valve location and operation guide — this page covers the causes, symptoms, safe checks, and repair-cost guidance drawn from La Cornue owner documentation and certified service records.
Gas Shutoff Valve Location and Operation
Every La Cornue gas appliance installation requires a dedicated manual shutoff valve located in an accessible position within three feet of the appliance. Knowing the location and correct operation of your gas shutoff valves is a fundamental safety requirement. In the event of a gas odor, equipment malfunction, or emergency, being able to shut off the gas supply quickly can prevent a serious incident.
Appliance Shutoff Valve
The appliance-dedicated shutoff valve is typically a quarter-turn ball valve installed on the rigid gas supply pipe behind or beside the appliance. To close the valve, rotate the handle 90 degrees so it is perpendicular to the pipe — this indicates the valve is fully shut. To open it, rotate the handle parallel to the pipe. If you need to pull your La Cornue appliance away from the wall for any reason, always shut this valve first. After any service to the gas connection, re-open the valve slowly and test for leaks before relighting the appliance.
Main Gas Meter Shutoff
The main shutoff valve at the gas meter controls gas supply to the entire building. It requires a wrench or meter key to operate and should only be closed by a household member during an emergency evacuation or as directed by emergency services. After the main valve has been closed, do not attempt to re-open it yourself — your gas utility must inspect the system and restore service.
Post the location of both valves in a visible place for all household members. La Cornue recommends confirming valve accessibility and operability as part of every annual appliance inspection.
