La cornue self-cleaning oven safety advisory: Overview
La cornue self-cleaning oven safety advisory — this page covers the causes, symptoms, safe checks, and repair-cost guidance drawn from La Cornue owner documentation and certified service records.
Self-Cleaning Cycle Safety Advisory
Select La Cornue models equipped with a pyrolytic self-cleaning function heat the oven cavity to temperatures of approximately 900°F (482°C) to incinerate food residue. This cleaning method is highly effective but requires specific safety precautions to be taken before and during every self-cleaning cycle.
Before Starting a Self-Cleaning Cycle
Remove all items from the oven including racks, baking stones, cookware, and thermometers before initiating the self-cleaning cycle — these items are not rated for pyrolytic temperatures and may warp, discolor, or release harmful fumes. Wipe out any large food deposits or heavy grease accumulation before running the cycle — excessive grease can produce heavy smoke and in rare cases ignite during the pyrolytic process. Ensure the range hood is operating on its highest setting throughout the full cycle. Keep children and pets away from the kitchen during the self-cleaning cycle, as oven exterior surfaces reach temperatures that can cause contact burns.
During and After the Cycle
Do not attempt to open the oven door during the self-cleaning cycle — the door is locked as a safety measure and the interior is at dangerous temperatures. If smoke becomes excessive or a fire detector activates, cancel the cycle using the control panel stop function and allow the oven to cool naturally. Never use water to cool the oven after a self-cleaning cycle. Allow a minimum of two hours after the cycle completes before opening the oven door and removing ash residue with a damp cloth.
